Sarnatherm XPS
Extruded Polystyrene Thermal Insulation Boards for Roofing and Waterproofing Systems
Sarnatherm® XPS is a rigid thermal insulation board manufactured from extruded polystyrene (XPS). It is suitable for use with Sika roofing and waterproofing systems, helping improve thermal insulation performance, reduce heat transfer, and enhance the overall performance of roofing systems.
With its strong board structure and low water absorption, Sarnatherm® XPS is suitable for applications requiring moisture-resistant insulation materials that can be used in various roofing systems, including both new construction and roof renovation projects.
The product can be used in conventional roofing systems, mechanically fastened systems, adhered systems, and applications involving waterproofing systems. It is suitable for buildings requiring improved energy efficiency and reduced heat transfer into the building.
Applications of Sarnatherm XPS
Sarnatherm® XPS is suitable for thermal insulation applications in roofing and waterproofing systems, such as:
Thermal insulation installation for new roofs
Repair and renovation of existing roofs
Conventional roofing structures
Mechanically fastened roofing systems
Adhesively bonded roofing systems
Applications requiring thermal insulation in combination with waterproofing systems
Buildings requiring reduced heat transfer through the roof
Key Features of Sarnatherm XPS
Rigid, strong, and versatile XPS thermal insulation boards
Suitable for Sika roofing and waterproofing systems
Helps reduce heat transfer into buildings
Low water absorption, making it suitable for moisture-related applications
Suitable for both new roofing projects and roof renovation work
Compatible with various installation methods, including mechanically fastened and adhered systems
Available in various sizes to suit different application requirements
Helps improve energy efficiency and indoor comfort
Installation Method
Sarnatherm® XPS can be installed below or above Sika roofing/waterproofing membranes, depending on the system design.
For waterproofing applications, overburden materials may be used to help secure the insulation boards in place. sarnatherm_xps
Avoid Direct Contact with PVC
An important consideration is:
Polystyrene should not come into direct contact with PVC
A separation layer, such as Sarnafelt NWP, must be installed between Sarnatherm XPS and the membrane in both roofing and waterproofing systems
Important Limitations
Exercise caution when using solvents near polystyrene insulation
Do not use solvent-based adhesives in systems containing polystyrene
Foam plastic insulation boards are combustible when exposed to sufficient heat or flame
Protect the insulation from open flames and ignition sources
Do not install insulation in direct contact with chimneys, heater vents, steam pipes, or surfaces with temperatures exceeding 65°C
Bareback membranes must not be installed in direct contact with polystyrene
In areas exposed to high reflected heat, such as near metal walls or glass surfaces, additional thermal protection should be considered
